Accelerator Sticks
The chances of your accelerator sticking are virtually zero - it only affects a small handful of drivers around the world each year. It is always useful to know what to do just in case. STAY CALM:  This is easier said than done, but you need to be in total control. DO NOT SWITCH YOUR ENGINE OFF: Things like your servo assisted brakes and power steering need the engine running for them to work.  An additional danger is the risk of activating the steering lock. BRAKE FIRMLY: The brakes on your car have tremendous stopping power - avoid pumping the brakes. Avoid using the handbrake as this may cause the rear of the car to skid sideways. PRESS DOWN THE CLUTCH: This will disconnect the engine from your wheels so the car cannot go any faster.  The engine will over rev but most cars engine management will cut this out.  In a worst case scenario you could wreck your engine - but you would be alive.  In an Automatic car select the neutral position on the gear selector. LOOK FOR AN ESCAPE ROUTE: While braking try to find an escape route if you need it. This could be the hard shoulder of a motorway.  If there is a brick wall and a hedge where you are heading - aim for the hedge. ONCE STOPPED SWITCH OFF YOUR ENGINE: When your car is stopped and safe, switch off the engine.  Make sure you are aware of what is happening all around you, especially on multi lane roads. KEEP CALM - KEEP SAFE
