ICE - In Case of Emergency campaign
A Cambridge based paramedic has launched a national campaign to encourage people to store emergency contact details in their mobile phones.  The plan was hatched after he struggled to get contact details from shocked or injured patients.   The paramedic said  "I was reflecting on some difficult calls I've attended, where people were unable to speak to me through injury or illness and we were unable to find out who they were. I discovered that many people carry mobile phones and we were using them to discover who they were. It occurred to me that if we had a uniform approach to searching inside a mobile phone for an emergency contact, then that would make it easier for everyone."  Research shows that less than 25% of people carry such information. He said it is always difficult knowing who to call, someone might have “Mum” in their phone book but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’d want them contacted in an emergency. Almost everybody carries a mobile phone and with ICE we would know immediately who to contact and what number to ring - the person may even know of their medical history. This information could be vital in a Life or Death situation. The campaign is asking for people to think very carefully about who will be their ICE contact - particularly it that person has to give consent for emergency medical treatment. ENTER ICE (In case of emergency) into your mobile’s phone book and log the name and number of someone who should be contacted in an emergency.
