Driving too close to the vehicle in front (Tailgating) is a very dangerous but common habit that many people get away with most of the time. This means that every day they are NOT involved in any crashes and do not get stopped by the police. Because of this fact they do not see any danger in what they are doing. When was the last time you had to brake sharply to avoid hitting the car ahead? Or, cursed under breath (or out loud) because the driver ahead was holding you up? Most drivers consider they keep a safe distance, but in reality there are a lot of drivers following far too closely to the vehicle in front.       BE WARNED - THIS OFFENCE NOW CARRIES AN ON THE SPOT FINE OF £100 & 3 PENALTY POINTS ON YOUR LICENCE! Some drivers pay very little attention to what is going on around them because they are too busy daydreaming. Daydreaming about holidays. Daydreaming about a new hairstyle. Daydreaming about what to wear tonight. We all daydream from time to time, but driving requires your full attention and some daydreamers end up getting away from it all permanently. We all get distracted from time to time but some drivers get distracted very easily and you will see them: Putting on make up Using mobile phones. Reading newspapers. Reading maps. Doing crossword puzzles. Even watching TV on laptops. Some drivers are very short sighted and impatient trying to “Get there” hopefully a few gaining extra seconds by sitting inches off the rear of your bumper. Other drivers are just plain bullies who get some strange kind of pleasure from harassing others - don’t let them, simply pull over and let them pass and they will not have anybody to bully. SOLUTIONS TO THE TAILGATER Gradually increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front. This will give you more time and space to stop - especially in an emergency. It will also give the tailgater more time to react to your braking. When a safe opportunity arises increase the gap further so they can overtake you. Let them pass - if the driver stays behind you, pull in and allow them to pass. Keep calm and keep safe.
